two sections founded at different times: the old city in 1367, and the Huguenot new city dating from 1686. They have been
under common administration since 1812. Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg: The
university was founded in 1743 and does now consist of 11 departments: Protestant Theology, Law, Medicine, Philosophy, History
and Sociology, Languages and Literature, Mathematics and Physics, Biology and Chemistry, Geography and Geology, Engineering
(all of them in Erlangen), Economics, and Educational Theory (both of them in Nürnberg) with renowned institutes and university
clinics as well as the university library with rare bibliophile editions.
Sightseeing features: The
baroque structure of the city centre, the ancient margravial residence with palace garden, botanic garden, and oragery, along
with Atzelsberg, the towns family castle, have remained intact. Markgrafentheater is the oldest baroque stage in all of southern
Germany which is still played upon, and the municipal museum offers a fascinating insight into local history and development.
It is worth mentioning the universitys science museums, beautiful churches both ancient and modern, and, in the south and
west of the town, modern residential areas with parks and gardens, which blend harmoniously with the rest of the city.
